The death of Kate Spade left everyone—from the fashion industry to the people who supported her brand—heartbroken. But one of the lasting impressions revolved around the first handbags women bought from the brand and how they still have them.
That said, we thought of honoring the late designer by highlighting the iconic bags and other accessories from Kate Spade New York. If you have one of them, then this will be a trip down memory lane for you. If you haven’t copped them yet, some of them are available here in the Philippines or you can have them delivered. Check them out below.
Sam Tote
The Sam Tote is a classic design that’s waterproof and also the perfect accessory for any occasion. This is also dubbed as the bag that every working woman bought with their first paycheck. According to Glamour, “This black waterproof tote put Kate Spade New York on the map when it first appeared, in the early nineties. And though it’s been off the brand’s shelves for a while now, shoppers freak out every time the style pops up on the resale market.” Available on Farfetch.
Bow Terrace Small Fulton
This handbag is known for its colorblocked design, wide square shape and the bow detail on the front. The inside, which is lined with a polka-dotted fabric, has two compartments so you can organize your stuff properly. Taylor Swift was also spotted carrying an olive green version of this bag once, and Demi Lovato has the all-black one. It’s so popular that it’s sold out everywhere!
Watson Lane Lyla
Evening Standard noted that when you see Kate Spade’s nylon-made bags, it feels familiar. It’s like, at one point in your life, you owned one and you didn’t even notice it. Seeing oversized bags like the Watson Lane Lyla, we totally get it. It’s spacious so it might’ve been used as a college bag or a work bag. Available at Rustan’s Makati.
Raffia bags
In 2006, Kate Spade released raffia bags even before woven bags became a social media favorite. These were first unveiled for their spring/summer collection of that year. Entertainment Tonight reported that these came in bright colors and the traditional woven detail. But Kate didn’t stop with bags, she also used raffia on shoes under Frances Valentine.
Keds x Kate Spade New York Triple Glitter
Aside from bright color, Kate Spade made their mark with anything glittery. Their collab with Keds was the epitome of that as they came out with glittery sneakers that can be worn with everyday outfits, and even to weddings. Available at Glorietta 3.
Kate Spade New York for Minnie Mouse Francis
Another iconic collab was this one with Minnie Mouse. They revamped their bags to include Minnie’s red polka-dotted bow onto the bags. The Francis has a shape of Minnie’s head and ears topped with a bright red bow. It’s a roomy tote bag and we’re definitely adding it to our list of office-appropriate bags. Available online.
