Are brands getting away with selling overly distressed clothes at high prices?

In the past year, distressed clothing has gone way too far. Remember last year’s “naked pants?” Now, different luxury brands have made clothing missing large amounts of fabric. Because of this, you might think that you’d be saving some money. Well, you thought wrong.

A recent addition to this fad is Maison Margiela’s Black Decortique V-Neck Sweater. It is described as a “long sleeve rib knit wool sweater in black. Cut-outs throughout.” And by cutouts they mean the sweater is missing front and back panels, and majority of the sleeves. But, don’t worry, there are still sleeve cuffs and a hem.

You can cop your own for $950 on Ssense. Going through the product photos, you will see a model wearing it alone or over another sweater. If I’m paying close to $1,000 for a piece of clothing, it has to at least have a decent amount of fabric.

But this isn’t the first time the brand has done it. They also have a White Skeleton Shell Shirt, which costs $1,095. It is a “long sleeve cotton poplin shirt in white [with] cutouts and raw edges throughout.” Similar to the sweater, it just looks like an outline of a shirt.

Other brands are following suit like Gloria Coelho who has this distressed T-shirt. It’s a shirt that looks like it has been ripped to shreds.

By the looks of the photos, it seems that brands are trying to make these pieces look stylish but I’m having a hard time seeing that. Furthermore, I don’t understand how they can charge so much for those items. Sure, distressed is in but they are taking it way too far. Do you guys agree? Or would you wear these clothes? We’re curious as to know what you think about it.
