Chances are that you own a pair of Birkenstock or at least know a close friend or relative who does—the classic yet ugly-pretty sandal has been around since forever and has gained popularity in the recent years. Even if Birkenstock collaborated with Rick Owens (pony hair, remember?) and Colette, they’re cool enough to decline a collab with hit brands like Supreme and Vetements.
In an interview with The Cut, Birkenstock CEO Oliver Reichert said they turned down the collaboration because they didn’t need additional demand to their factories and at the moment, they’re still working on delivering at the orders for 2 million pairs of their classic styles. And besides both brands only want to slap on their logo on the sandal anyway, the interview explains how the customers for those brands pretty much know about Birkenstock already. So really, there’s no point.
“There’s no benefit for us except prostitution,” says Oliver. “Because this is just prostitution.”
Creative director of Vetements, Demna Gvasalia, told The Cut that he wanted to work with Birkenstock because they were really comfortable. And even if Oliver is not completely sold with the idea, he allowed his marketing team to discuss with the brand again.
