‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ shows a new side to the witch we know

Whether you grew up watching Sabrina, the Teenage Witch or Sabrina: The Animated Series, a part of you might have wished you were a witch—or at least half of one. I remember watching both shows growing up so I was excited to hear about the reboot The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. When the photos and teasers videos were released, it was obvious that this series was going to be different from the original. It was going be given a darker storyline.

I’ll admit, as someone who doesn’t have a strong stomach for horror and gore, I had a difficult time watching some episodes. However, I still went on because I was engrossed in the fantasy and dark magic it focused on. Fair warning, before you watch this: Make sure you’re prepared because Satanic topics come up throughout the season. But, just remember, it’s fiction and enjoy the show.

Witchcraft and mystery aside, the show also portrayed two types of women. One who follows blindly and is at the mercy of a man while the other tries to forge her own path. The main woman, of course, being Sabrina.

In the 10 episodes, you will see her constantly question everything and rebel to the highest level. Honestly, at one point, I started to feel frustrated with her because she was always causing trouble by going against the status quo in both sides of her life. And then I realized that that was the whole point. We shouldn’t feel angry or threatened by those who want to take a stand for their own beliefs. Although, they also showed how one can take it too far.

Sabrina is always faced with a choice and before she decides, she tries to weigh all options, making sure she is doing the right thing to help the people she loves. Because of this, you can also see the kind of influence on the people around her like her aunties, best friends, and Prudence, a witch who was out to get her in the beginning. After a few episodes, you will see how each of these women start to speak up and take action. You can tell that they are no longer content with just sitting by and letting outside factors control their lives.

Despite Sabrina’s good intentions, she can take it a bit too far. With wanting to always make things right, she tries to meddle in things that are out of her control. As the plot thickens, her hubris starts to show. She was too focused on helping the people in her life that she disregarded others. She took on a lot of responsibility.

I don’t want to give away too much before the premier so I won’t get ahead of myself. Oh, and don’t forget to tune in to the series starting Oct. 26, just in time for Halloween festivities.
