Don’t expect VP Robredo to run for President in 2022

The next presidential elections is still three years away but questions on who will run are already coming up. Vice-President Leni Robredo was recently asked about it in light of Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio’s consideration of the position. But Robredo had a simple answer: It’s not gonna happen as of now.

“Iyong sa akin lang, magiging masama para sa akin kung ang iisipin ko 2022 kasi ang dami kong ginagawa bilang Pangalawang Pangulo” (In my view, it will be bad for me to think of 2022 because I’m doing a lot as Vice-President), Robredo told reporters. She also said she wants to focus on Angat Buhay, the VP’s project addressing the needs of those living in poverty, instead of campaigning in voter-rich areas.

When asked about the possibility of running against Sara Duterte-Carpio in 2022, Robredo didn’t directly address it. But she mentioned that becoming President is “destiny” and it’s given to a candidate if it’s meant for them. “Iyong kasaysayan natin nagpapakita na hindi ito napapaghandaan. Maraming nagbalak. Pero kapag para sa iyo ito, magiging sa iyo. Kapag hindi talaga ito para sa iyo, kahit anong gawin mo, hindi sa iyo ibibigay.” (Our history has shown that it’s not something you prepare for. Many have tried. But if it’s meant for you then it will be yours. If it’s not really meant for you, whatever you do, it won’t be given.)

This may also be alluding to the fact that Pres. Rodrigo Duterte kept changing his mind about running in the 2016 elections. We all know by now how that ended up.

What do you think? Should VP Robredo consider the presidential post in 2022 or just take a step back for now?
