A fun bucket list for the modern, empowered woman

Hey, it’s Women’s Month! While you’re busy doing your part and trying to empower the women in your lives, don’t forget to focus on yourself too. Some ways you can do that is practice self-love, or attend events that empower you. It’s also the perfect time to push yourself to do and be better. Go out of your comfort zone, and try things you’ve never tried before—ones that you know are healthy and can help your overall well-being. That said, we’ve made a bucket list of activities for you to try this month and beyond. Who knows? You just might find yourself excelling at one or two of these activities.

Take pole dance classes

No, it’s not just about being sexy—though making you feel sexy is one of the major benefits of this sport. (Yup, it’s officially considered a sport.) It combines acrobatics and dance and is actually a really tough and intense full body workout. It requires you to work your upper body, core and thighs. It also increases your flexibility and cardiovascular health, as well as strengthen your muscles and joints—and those are just some of the physical benefits. Not gonna lie, I’m already looking at studios. Right now, I’m deciding between Polecats and Pole Dolls.

Try capoeira

Women in martial arts is not a new thing anymore, fortunately. There’s different ones you can try like jiu-jitsu and muay thai. If you’re intimidated by these though, you might want to try capoeira instead. According to Kadara Capoeira, an international capoeira school, it’s an “Afro Brazilian martial art that incorporates both attack and defensive moves, acrobatics, music, dance, and graceful fluid movements.” Um, defense and dance? Sounds like something I can get behind.

Get into freediving

It’s summer, and it may be time to take your swimming plans to another level. If you’re a mermaid and live for the ocean and the beach, then you’ll definitely love this. Essentially, freediving, as the name suggests, is diving but without any underwater equipment. So it’s just you holding your breath for a really long time. Okay, it’s much more technical than it sounds. You have to learn the techniques. Fortunately, there are organizations Sea Explorers Philippines that offer classes. And when you’re ready for a new challenge, you can try their scuba diving classes too.

Try out the flying trapeze

Scared of heights? That’s exactly why you should try this! Conquer your fears, girl. Don’t let it get in the way of you living out your Zendaya-in-The-Greatest-Showman dreams. Fortunately for you, we have a full size flying trapeze rig here in the Philippines, courtesy of Flying Trapeze Philippines. Located in Taguig, FTP caters to all ages, skill levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced), shapes and sizes. Plus, it’s a great workout too. It allows you to tone your upper body and core muscles—while giving you a literal high.

Learn how to code

Have you heard that supermodel Karlie Kloss can code? She’s actually really passionate about it, she even started a nonprofit education organization that teaches girls and young women computer programming. I remember, one of my professors from college told us that coding will soon become a fundamental skill, similar to writing and reading. It’s the language of the future, so you don’t necessarily need to have a career in it to want to learn it. So why don’t you start now? It’s certainly a useful skill to have. You can enroll in online classes, for one. You can also join Women Who Code, the largest and most active community dedicated to inspiring women to excel in technology careers. Although it’s primarily for professional women in that field, current and aspiring coders are welcome too.

Attend personal development classes

You might deem these classes as unnecessary, but it’s highly important. We all need a little help to get by, there’s no shame in that. And of course, any opportunity to learn and better should be welcomed. You can enroll in workshops. John Robert Powers offers plenty of courses like Personality Development, and Dynamic Parenting. Plus, there are always workshops and events happening around you, so be on the lookout. For instance, these Time Management and Public Speaking workshops happening on March 23 and April 13, respectively.
