The fashion world grieves as we lose another designer. WWD reports that French couturier Hubert de Givenchy passed away last Saturday at the age of 91. Throughout his career he created elegant and eye catching pieces that everyone loved.
He was also known for designing looks for Audrey Hepburn both on and off screen. She was his longtime muse and also inspired his perfume called L’Interdit. You might recognize this black dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s
He also created this white gown for the actress which she wore to the 26th Academy Awards in 1954.
Another iconic look of Hubert’s is a dress that Jackie Kennedy wore while visiting France in 1961.
In 1979, a model walked the runway in a Givenchy wedding dress with a hat attached to a long tulle train.
Hubert wasn’t afraid to use color and prints too as seen in this ensemble from his fall/winter show in 1984.
Mixing prints? Hubert did it in 1988.
In his 1992 show, his daughter modeled one of his pink dresses.
These are just some of Hubert’s iconic looks that he designed during the span of his career. Clare Waight, who is the brand’s first female artistic director said in a statement, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of a great man and artist I have had the honor to meet and get to know since my appointment at Givenchy.” His family is also planning a private funeral and asked that donations to UNICEF be made in his name instead of sending flowers.
