This ‘Captain Marvel’ theory may prove she’s more powerful than Thanos

Now that the collective freakout over Captain Marvel has slightly subsided (let’s be real here: we’ll be hyped up until the end of the year), let’s talk about the underlying theories you might’ve observed in the trailer. Of course, the costume change wasn’t the only one that we spotted. So we’re here to list down more, including elements that confirmed previous speculations.

Sit back and grab your theory goggles, Captain Marvel fans.

It’s really set in the ’90s

Literally the first few seconds of the Captain Marvel trailer showed the superheroine crashing into a Blockbuster Video store. In case you didn’t know, this is a video rental place that was big in the ’90s. It officially went out of business in 2013. Other obvious scenes that prove that this is sort of a prequel is the fact that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is alive, younger, and still has two of his eyes. Also making a comeback is SHIELD Agent Phil Coulson, who appears younger as well.

Possible memory loss

A key moment in the trailer is Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) saying that she gets memory flashes of her life on Earth. This is after she crashed in the planet while she’s wearing her green Kree suit. There’s a possibility that she’s suffering from amnesia, one that was caused by the explosion of the Psyche-Magnitron, an alien device, and she’ll be recruited to be a Kree soldier in the Starforce.

“I’m not what you think I am”

Digital Spy presented an interesting theory about Carol being a Skrull—a race of extraterrestrial shapeshifting villain who are hell-bent on invading Earth—in the movie. Meaning that she might’ve been abducted by the Kree, erasing her memories and implanting human memories into her brain, so she won’t go back to her old ways.

On the other hand, Polygon also suggested that Carol might be hunting down the Skrulls in Earth as her duty in the Starforce. Evidence: The scene where she punched an old woman in the train. Ouch.

Where she really got her powers

I’ll keep this short. In the comics, Carol got her powers after the Psyche-Magnitron exploded and irradiated her. This made her half-Kree and developed powers similar to Kree captain Mar-Vell, aka the original Captain Marvel. (Sooo unique.) Mar-Vell would later pass the title to Carol after her role as Ms. Marvel. It’s not clear yet whether they’ll show this in the film and if Jude Law will play Mar-Vell or Yon-Rogg, the evil Kree alien who was partly responsible for the explosion.

Her super-strong, cosmic powers

Carol has another identity in the comics known as Binary, described as a cosmic-powered being that channels a strong energy from the stars. There are several theories that points to Captain Marvel evolving into Binary in the movie, especially with the last scene in the trailer where she’s immensely powering up and looking like a bright star.

Comic Book predicts that we might see this persona in the film, but not how she’ll get these powers. (Which is, again, via an alien force. There are lots of aliens here, guys.) It’s also possible that they’ll slowly introduce Binary in Captain Marvel since she’ll be powerful enough to defeat Thanos in this form. Ooooh, so exciting!

Something cute

This isn’t part of the trailer but this is still worth noting. First, look at the movie poster very carefully. Do you notice anything odd?

If you didn’t see it, here’s the answer: There’s a cat tail on the lower left.

Spot the cat butt

It’s a cute little Easter egg to Carol’s pet alien cat, Chewie. But she isn’t an ordinary feline as she can release deadly tentacles. I already love this movie because of this fur baby.
