Why ‘Lady Bird’ Director Greta Gerwig’s Oscar Nom Is Important

This year’s Academy Awards nominations are out and everyone’s cheering for their favorites. One of them is Best Director nominee Greta Gerwig of Lady Bird, who surpassed a milestone in the Oscars’s 90-year history.

According to Time, Greta is the fifth woman to be nominated in the Best Director category. She’s also the only female director in the list this year. Other fan-favorites like Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) and Dee Rees (Mudbound) weren’t given the honor.

Greta’s Oscar nomination is also a big deal as it comes a bit after her Golden Globes snub. Yeah, that part where Natalie Portman threw shade at the all-male nominees.

The first female director to win an Oscar was Katherine Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2008. Before her, Lina Wertmuller (Seven Beauties), Jane Campion (The Piano), and Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) had been nominated.

Lady Bird, starring Saoirse Ronan, is a coming-of-age film about a girl’s turbulent relationship with her mother. The movie has received several nominations, including Best Movie in the Oscars.

Will Greta and the rest of Lady Bird get their well-deserved awards on March 4? We hope so!
