If you were lucky enough to catch Erykah Badu’s concert last Saturday, you understand how surreal it is to see her perform live. The queen of neo-soul is everything you want her to be and more. She serenaded the audience with songs they love like “Bag Lady,” “Love Of My Life,” and “Appletree” while the crowd sang along with her.
Aside from entertaining us with her musicality, she brought up issues experienced both in the US and the Philippines. When she started talking to the crowd she said, “I heard you need some healing.” And she was right, everyone replied with a “yeah” and “wooh” because she was speaking the truth. She also brought up the topic of police violence and corruption, something felt among minorities in the States as well as the Philippines.
Erykah also brought up the controversy surrounding Christopher Columbus Day. “He thought he was in India so he called the people Indians. And then he took their sh*t from ‘em and infested them with diseases.”
After discussing these issues in between songs she told us all to “let it go.” Maybe she didn’t mean to let go of the issues but to let go of our worries. It was definitely a healing experience as she encouraged everyone to love one another and fight for our dreams. It sounds easy but with what’s been going on in the world lately, it can seem impossible.
I’m not sure how everyone else felt, but I sure did feel uplifted after her performance. If you were at the concert too, let us know what your favorite moment was in the comments section below.
