When Nina Garcia took on the role of editor-in-chief at Elle, she left behind an opening for creative director at Marie Claire. Now that job is no longer available (in case you were just about to hand in your application) and brings to the forefront the name Kate Lanphear.
Kate is a long-time publishing force, working in Sydney, London, and New York. In 2015, she was appointed editor-in-chief of Maxim. Prior to this she was the style editor at Elle and T Magazine. She is also a part of Business of Fashion’s 500, where she shares the need to always be flexible in fashion, “It’s a challenge for any magazine to evolve in turn and stay relevant.” Her most recent and one of the most notable contribution is how she helped Google optimize its fashion week coverage. That stylized carousel you see on top of the Google’s search results when you look for the latest from Paris’ runway? That’s Kate’s handiwork. The New York Times even notes how Kate was “Google’s answer to Ms. [Eva] Chen,” who is the head of Instagram’s fashion partnerships.
Kate is to start her new role at Marie Claire immediately. The magazine’s editor-in-chief Anne Fulenwider said in the official statement, “Kate is one of the most creative, stylish, sought-after talents in fashion today. She brings with her invaluable expertise and relationships in the fashion and tech community that align perfectly with the vision of Marie Claire. Her discerning eye for smart style will help us continue to create extraordinary content for our readers.”
