In a recent speech, Pres. Rodrigo Duterte made headlines for telling female NPA rebels to not have children. He said that this will only “multiply the human problem.” He may have meant that they couldn’t tend the kids while they’re out fighting. Or, he’s blaming the women for possibly bringing future rebels into the world. It depends on how you look at it.
However, his following statement still made our eyebrows raise. Duterte explained that his “shoot in the vagina” comment was meant to threaten and insult the female rebels. Further confirming that he didn’t mean it as a joke before. “Galit talaga ako,” (I’m really angry) he said.
People can justify his anger all they want, but you can’t deny that it’s an extreme and dangerous statement to make. Especially one that’s targeting women and promoting violence against them. Plus, he has the audacity to tell them to not have kids because it will cause more problems.
Given that logic, maybe we should tell the same to people who like throwing around rape jokes? Let’s also include people who like saying inappropriate things during serious interviews. All our “OA” problems would probably be solved by then. Oh, and don’t forget the threats!
Seriously though, blaming only the women for such problems and directing anger at them is machismo at its finest. We can’t stand how misogynistic he is coming off every time he tries to attack the rebels and this needs to stop. Now.
