Yesterday, Preen.ph released a commentary regarding Sen. Risa Hontiveros’ recent statement to remove all pornographic materials during an interpellation on Senate Bill 1888 or the “Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancy Act of 2018.” Earlier today, Sen. Hontiveros sent us an open letter to clarify certain matters.
The senator first thanked Preen.ph and the online advocates who have been outspoken about the issue of pornography and teenage pregnancy. In a statement she said, “All of you were correct in pointing out that pornography is not one of the main causes of teenage pregnancy. Rather, it is the lack of education and proper information among the youth. Together with the underlying problems that contribute to teenage pregnancy, such as poverty and lack of sufficient access to better health care and reproductive rights, I have always believed that the best way forward is comprehensive, age appropriate education on human sexuality, the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, and safe sex practices. These have always been the causes we fight for, and these are the causes we will continue to fight for.”
Regarding welcoming Sen. Tito Sotto’s suggestion to remove pornographic materials online, she clarified that it “was to recognize its potentially dangerous effects on the young, in this case, child pornography.” Hontiveros further explained she’s pushing for the full implementation of Republic Act 9775 or the “Anti-Child Pornography Law.”
