What the MAC x Selena Collection Means for Women

The release date of the highly-anticipated MAC x Selena is coming soon, (Oct. 6, if you didn’t know yet) and the excitement isn’t just about that fiery red lipstick in purple packaging. It’s about celebrating all kinds of beauty.

For a makeup brand that’s collaborated with Ellie Goulding, Rihanna, Caitlyn Jenner, and many other big names to create this collection means a lot to the Latina community. Arianna Davis of Refinery29 writes, “Even though [the collaboration] happened after Selena Quintanilla’s death, we can thank her for launching mainstream acceptance of Latina beauty in Hollywood…opening the door for the likes of Eva Longoria, Zoe Saldana, Salma Hayek, Sofia Vergara, Eva Mendes, Shakira and more to become not just entertainers, but brands within themselves—and the faces for mainstream cosmetic companies.”

It also doesn’t hurt that the collection was brought about by a petition via Change.org. Patty Rodriguez, a Selena fan, put up the petition in 2014, citing how there should be something made for Latinas, by Latinas. What this means is we’re seeing how real women are confident in their own skin, showing off their take on beauty rather than falling into the usual commercial standards.

Frankly, it’s about time something like this happened. And it would be awesome if this were the start for more beauty brands to come out with lines specific to their consumers rather than be instruments to reach a kind of beauty that discriminates. It’s high time that exclusivity in makeup becomes more about inclusivity. The more, the prettier, don’t you think?
