‘The Kingmaker’ director compares the Marcoses to the Trumps

“The Kingmaker” director Lauren Greenfield said former first lady Imelda Marcos reminded her of US president Donald Trump while interviewing her for the docu-film.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival over the weekend. It explores and exposes “the Marcos family’s long history of corruption, extravagance, and brutality, including Calauit Island, a safari park that favors the well-being of its exotic animals to the detriment of the people living there.” It also shows Imelda’s efforts in helping her son, Bongbong’s race to become vice-president back in 2016. (As we know, Leni Robredo won the election, and Bongbong accused her of cheating.)

What caught Lauren’s attention was how Imelda would defend the history of their family amid the controversies they faced and the atrocities that happened during Martial Law. “I think she is extremely confident about her story, her place in history and her legacy and that’s what I wanted to hear from her,” she said in a press conference.

Lauren also focused on the political comeback of Imelda and her family, noting she was “amazed” by how the Philippines welcomed them into public office again. “People have treated Marcos as a laughable figure. [It] reminds me of how we didn’t take [Donald] Trump seriously, and I think she often has the last laugh,” she said.

She’s not kidding though—Imelda’s daughter, Imee, did become a senator. There are also calls for Bongbong to run for president in 2022.

Meanwhile, a Variety review noted that the film will challenge the audience to “untangle the veracity of Imelda’s own myth-building.” It also informs viewers of the political dynasties here in the Philippines.

“The Kingmakerwill reportedly be in theaters later this year and will premiere on American TV network Showtime in 2020. There are no news yet on whether this will premiere in the Philippines or not. If it is, we’re getting tickets.
