Why flaunting natural beauty shouldn’t be a trend

Trend

Every day, we come across new and interesting beauty trends. Some are outrageous like Christmas-colored hair, while others are more doable like this inner corner highlight trend. It’s always fun to celebrate these unique executions and the creativity behind them. Although, there is one thing popular in beauty now that we shouldn’t really consider a trend: going natural. A trend is described as “a topic that is the subject of many posts on social media website or application within a short period of time.” Because these are usually time-based, I don’t think we should call this movement or lifestyle as such.

From wearing hair naturally and going bare-faced, more and more people are ditching products to show off the real them. As amazing as this is, I don’t think we should go around calling this a craze because this is just women being themselves. This isn’t something temporary or passing, there will always be those who will choose against makeup and hair dye. Now, going this route doesn’t make you anti-makeup, it just means this is what you’re comfortable with. One woman who is all about this is Alicia Keys. In 2016, she decided, “I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dream, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.”

When Alicia decided not to cover up, this was more than just her face and hair, it was all the good things. Just like putting her beauty and flaws on display, she wanted to do the same with everything in her life from her goals to the obstacles she encounters. As much as some people want to milk this change and brands try to exploit this with “natural-looking” products, we should appreciate it for what it is. Sure, wearing makeup is fun and exciting but have you tried living in your skin and feeling confident in who you are? Maybe you should and see why this switch in lifestyle is worth it.
