Fixing the biggest cold weather problem: dry skin

By Jacqueline Ariason December 13, 2018

Cold weather is the worst, especially for people who tend to get dry and flaky skin. Recently, I found out that my skin peeled off really bad after my recent trips because of the cooler breeze. Even the moisturizer didn’t save me while I was there, and the skin on my nose isn’t having it.

Here in the Philippines, we seldom get that climate unless it’s raining or we go to the mountain province. But it’s still a very real problem for many of us as soon as the temperature drops.

If you’re looking for a solution to your dry skin woes, here are skincare and some makeup tips you can follow. The results are going to take some time, but at least you can fake the appearance of non-flaky skin in the process.

Buff out the dry skin

You don’t have to do this every day but when you do, it’s best to exfoliate at night. Bustle notes that the areas you should focus on are the nose and chin as they get dried the most. This will also ensure that you’ll have a smooth surface when you wake up in the morning.

Shop: St. Ives Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub. Available at Watsons stores.

Change your shower habits a bit

Healthline prescribed that less hot water and using soaps sparingly will help bring your skin back to life. According to the site, the best course is to have less than 10-minute showers and to only use mild soaps in areas where it’s needed. Of course, this is up to you and if it works out, then just keep at it.

Choose the right moisturizer for your skin

Not every moisturizer is going to work well with your skin. Healthline cited that cream types are popular as the skin absorbs it quicker, while lotions can be less moisturizing. You can also try oil-based moisturizers which are less greasy and can fight dry skin. If you’re looking for a great face oil that works to hydrate skin, the Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum is said to do just that. (Kimi Juan swears by this.) Just be ready to splurge for this skincare investment.

Shop: Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum. Available on Net-a-Porter.

Hydrate the base first

Before you apply your work-day makeup, you need to have a hydrating primer on-hand. This will ensure that your foundation goes on smoothly and lessens the chance of it cracking on you.

Shop: Banila Co. Prime Primer Hydrating. Available at SM Mall of Asia.

Skip the matte foundation

Personally, I love a good matte foundation because I have oily skin on a regular basis. But since it’s on the dry spectrum, it’s time to use a dewy formula. For this, try Make Up For Ever’s Water Blend Foundation.

Shop: Make Up For Ever Water Blend Foundation. Available at Greenbelt 3.

No powder!

This is another mistake I’ve done in the past few months because, in my head, powders are like the cherry on top of any makeup look. However, it only emphasizes the dry parts of my face. StyleCaster also noted that it’ll just make one’s makeup appear cakey. This doesn’t just point to setting powders—you should also switch your blushes and highlighters to cream formula for now.
