From bike shorts to luxe pyjamas: The biggest fashion trends to hit 2018

Ultimately, we do believe trends merely come and go. You’re free to be bold and try them if you please but shouldn’t be pressured if you don’t want to. In a couple of years, these will surely be nostalgic memories kept in the archives of fashion history. But we are curious about your takes on them. As 2018 comes to a close, we sit back and reflect on some of our choices. Fashion choices, that is. And don’t worry, this is not some scholarly essay but a brief roundup of the trends that took us by storm this year. Let us know if you think we should move on from these, or if we need to carry them over until the next year.

Bike shorts

Thanks to Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 6 collection the bike shorts became officially in fashion again since Princess Diana made it happen in the ’90s. With supermodels and trendsetters, including Ye’s wife Kim Kardashian, wearing them, it became officially trendy to even pair with blazers and heels.

Pyjamas

Giving a whole new meaning to “woke up like this,” this trend paved the way in making your cute pyjamas no longer limited to the bedroom. People are bringing the comfort of sleepwear to the streets, and it’s totally acceptable now. High-fashion, even.

Athleisure wear

Who says only sporty people can be seen in activewear? This year, even the least athletic people were not immune to the power of cute track pants, especially. Women are pairing them now with blouses and stilettos. The latest ones with buttons on the sides for adjustable slits, gave it an updated silhouette.

Sustainable fashion

This year is big on environmental causes—even fashion. One particular trend was the use of raw materials on bags and accessories, specifically. According to Edited, “There’s been a plethora of bamboo baskets, handwoven totes and straw bags on Instagram feeds.” In terms of material variations, wicker and bamboo were the most popular. Usually popular only in the summer season, this trend survive all year round.

Dad sneakers

2017’s obsession with classic white sneakers gave way to the chunky, ugly-pretty dad sneakers. Its resurgence can be traced back to the release of Balenciaga’s triple S trainers. Now, almost everyone is wearing them everywhere—from the streets to the most glam events.

PVC-mania

While there was a surge of organic materials this year, PVC also became big. From hats, to boots and bags, the translucent look was definitely happening.

Fanny packs

This is one of the ‘90s accessories which made a major comeback this year. This time, the fanny packs aren’t just worn in the waist, but slung across the body like a crossbody bag. It has become a streetwear staple and even the most luxurious fashion labels have released their version of it this year.

Pantsuits

Women had a lot of moments this year, and being total #girlbosses are one of them. This year we also saw a lot them power dress by opting for pants instead of dresses or skirts. This year gave birth to various pantsuit looks: patterned, brightly colored, textured, you name it.

Nostalgic fashion

The dad shoes and fanny packs aren’t the only trends which gave a nod to old fashion trends. Google revealed that among the most searched were ‘80, ‘90s, and ‘00s fashion. Runners up to the fanny pack and chunky sneakers as throwback accessories are beaded bags, bucket hats, and barettes.
